Plumpy'Nut started a (long overdue) revolution

There once was a time when treating starving and severely malnourished children was a hopeless endeavor. Thanks to decades of research, the persistence of a French food engineer and a French pediatrician, Plumpy'Nut emerged in 1996 as a revolutionary solution.

Edesia builds on Nutriset's solid foundation to innovate new products, such as Peanut'POW, to help further the impact and reach of these lifesaving ready-to-use foods.

Glossary

Ready-to-use Food (RUF): A general term used to describe fortified, nutrient-dense, high-energy food that can be eaten directly from the package and does not require refrigeration, cooking, or the addition of water.

Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF): A RUF developed to therapeutically treat children ages six months to five years who have been diagnosed by a medical professional with severe acute malnutrition (SAM).

Ready-to-use Supplementary Food (RUSF): A RUF developed to treat children ages six months to five years who have been diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM).

Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement (LNS): A family of RUF products used for prevention of malnutrition. These products are often given to children between the ages of six months and three years at risk of undernourishment or for at-risk women during pregnancy and lactation. More information on the research being done on LNS products can be found here.

Plumpy'Nut

nut-90Edesia produces Plumpy’Nut®, for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in children six months of age and older.

Plumpy’Nut is a peanut-based high-energy therapeutic food, based on the formulation of F-100 milk; it complies with the World Health Organization’s definition of RUTF.

Plumpy’Nut is primarily distributed through Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) programs throughout the world—where home-based feeding with RUTF is prescribed by a medical professional working within the community health system.

RUTF (with clean water and/or breastmilk) replaces a child’s diet for the duration of treatment. The average child receives three 92 gram packets per day for 7-10 weeks.

Plumpy'Sup

sup-90Plumpy’Sup® is a RUSF specifically formulated for children six months of age to five years with moderate acute malnutrition.

Plumpy'Sup is commonly part of targeted feeding supplementation programs and is frequently used in emergency situations.

RUSF is not meant to replace a child’s diet, but to supplement it with necessary micro and macro nutrients for recovery. The average child receives one 100 gram package per day for 7-10 weeks.

LNS-MQ

lns-mqLipid-based Nutrient Supplement Medium Quantity (LNS-MQ – 50g) is a supplementary food for children six months of age and older who are at risk of acute malnutrition during times of food insecurity. It provides essential nutrients necessary to avoid malnutrition in children whose diets (lacking diversity) are also not meeting their calorie and protein needs.

LNS-MQ is commonly part of targeted feeding supplementation programs and is frequently used in emergency situations.

Enov'Nutributter

nb-90

Enov’Nutributter® is a preventative lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS – 20g) specially designed for young children (6-24 months) to help fill nutrient gaps with the aim of promoting growth and development and preventing stunting in the first 1,000 days of life.

Enov'Nutributter is dosed at 1 packet per day

Plumpy'Mum

plumpymumPlumpy’Mum™ is a RUSF designed to treat malnutrition in pregnant and lactating women. It provides appropriate micronutrients and a balance of protein and energy to help fill micro- and macro-nutrient gaps.

The ultimate aim of Plumpy'Mum is to promote healthy pregnancies, births, and improve a child's growth in the first 1,000 days of life (the most critical time period to ensure lifelong health).

Evidence suggests that Plumpy'Mum is effective for pregnant women who are underweight or anemic.

Enov'Mum

emum-90Enov’Mum™ is a preventative lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS – 20g) specially designed to prevent malnutrition in pregnant and lactating women and to help fill nutrient gaps with the aim of having a positive effect on maternal status and birth outcomes, and improving child growth in the first 1,000 days of life.

Enov'Mum is dosed at 1 packet per day.

Peanut POW

pow-90PeanutPOW is a Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement Medium Quantity (LNS-MQ – 50g) for schoolchildren three years of age and older to complement foods available during school hours and to address nutrient gaps.

PeanutPOW is most suitable for use in schools: where hot lunches are unavailable, as an addition to unfortified hot lunches, as a morning snack, and/or for pre-school programs or for other types of programs targeting nutritional support to young children.

Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM): A serious, life-threatening condition characterized by severe wasting (thinness), which results from illness, lack of nutritious foods, or other underlying causes.

Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM): A state of moderate wasting (thinness) that makes children more susceptible to life-threatening illnesses.

Stunting: A state of chronic undernourishment, which is detrimental to cognitive and physical growth.

USAID Nutritional Support Programs

USAID LNS-MQ and Enov'Nutributter®: Edesia was awarded a three-year grant in 2015 through USAID’s Office of Food for Peace, International Food Relief Partnerships (IRFP) program for the production of LNS-MQ and Enov'Nutributter.

If your organization would like to become an IFRP Distribution Partner and receive funding and these products in-kind for your nutrition programming, please refer to the USAID website for annual applications (typically available in the spring).
